Where the Blind Horse Sings:
Love and Healing at an Animal Sanctuary
by Kathy Stevens
Foreword by Elizabeth Marshall Thomas
Author of The Hidden Life of Dogs
At the Catskill Animal Sanctuary, Kathy Stevens, along with her team of volunteers and the support of her community, is changing the world one frightened animal at a time. In her new book, Where the Blind Horse Sings, Kathy is sharing with us each and every miraculous story of unexpected recovery, friendship, and growth that has taken place at CAS.
More than anything else, this is a book about love. Written by the founder of Catskill Animal Sanctuary, a haven for abused farm animals, this book depicts a world in which distinctions between “human” and “animal” are meaningless, a world where care and affection trump years of neglect and abuse. You will hear deeply moving and heartfelt accounts of animals like Dino, an old toothless pony who survived a fire and became the first member of the CAS community, and Cinnamon, a recent addition, who arrived timid and thin, with a bullet hole in her left eye. You will meet Rambo, the sheep who informs the staff when an animal needs assistance; Babe, the 900-pound pig; Paulie, the former cockfighting rooster who eats lunch with the humans and accompanies the director around town on her errands; and dozens of other horses, ponies, cows, goats, sheep, donkeys, pigs, rabbits, and a variety of birds, all larger than life.
If it is true that, “[t]he purity of a person's heart can be quickly measured by how they regard animals,” then Kathy Stevens’s heart is immeasurable. Hers is a heart that will warm your own and perhaps inspire you to regard the animals in your life with just a little more humanity and empathy.
About the author: Kathy Stevens received her M.A. in public policy and education at Tufts University. After being an educator for nearly a decade, Kathy became the founder and director of CAS.

First Pet Show to add Canine Component to Annual Strawberry Festival
Denver, NC. For the first time, this year’s East Lincoln High School’s annual Strawberry Festival in Denver on Saturday, May 17, will offer a pet show. The show will offer opportunities for participants to showcase their pets’ unique character traits and good looks. Several prize categories will be offered, including, among others: most talented pet, most unusual pet, best behaved pet, cutest pet, cutest puppy, happiest pet, and best of show.
Registration will take place at the festival which will be at East Lincoln High School which is located at the intersection of Highway 73 and Little Egypt Road in Denver and will be from noon to 12:30pm. The show will be held from 12:30 to 1:30pm. Registration is $5.00 per entry and pets must be leashed or caged and up to date on all shots. Children are welcome to participate. The festival is open from 8am to 5pm and offers all kinds of activities, foods and vendors.
Prizes have been donated by the show’s sponsors: East Lincoln Animal Hospital, Pet Mania and PetsMart and include grooming packages, pet food, toys and beauty products. Kim Phillips, the show’s organizer, commented on the quality of the prize packages, “The show sponsors have gone out of their way to donate some really great prizes that any pet owner would be delighted to win. It’s worth coming out to the show just for the prizes, but we hope that pet lovers will participate as a fun way of showing off their furry friends and getting a little interaction with other owners and their pets as well. This is the first time we’ve done this event and with good participation we hope that this becomes an annual part of our festival.”
The show will be judged by panel of local celebrities who will award the prizes to contestants. Every participant will receive a prize.
The Lincoln County Humane Society will be on site as well with information and pets available for adoption. PetsMart will be present and will be giving away pet products throughout the day.
For more information on the show, contact Kim Phillips at 704-483-6035.
