Shelters are one of the first places that people tend to take stray animals they have found. Shelters are typically funded by local or state government and thus, are on a budget. This limits their ability to keep pets for long periods of time while waiting for them to be saved or adopted. Some even have time constraints on how long they can keep an animal before it is euthanized. In addition to filing a lost animal report with your local shelter, we also encourage you to contact rescue groups should you find a stray you cannot keep. Listed below are animal shelters in North Carolina by city. Shelters that use the gas chamber are coded (G) . ARGNC.com prefers injection as the most humane way to euthanize animals. If your local shelter uses gas chambers, please take the time as a local concerned citizen to contact them about changing to the more humane injection method. Additionally, we'd like to suggest, that if your city's shelter uses a gas chamber, please consider taking the animal to a vet to be euthanize humanely. It can be as much as $50.00 to do so, perhaps even more, but some vets may even do it at no charge so they, too, can do their share to ensure animals for whom homes cannot be found or who are diseased or injured beyond saving are euthanized humanely. Most shelters do the best they can to save animals, but the limits they experience are not conducive to saving large percentages of the animals. There are even some shelters that will contact rescue groups when they find an animal already domesticated and know that it would adopt quickly. Shelters have a place in our society, but it is incumbent upon society to ensure they are prepared, funded and motivated to follow humane procedures. Without your help, shelters only do what they can or are budgeted to do. We support and encourage the efforts of the public towards ensuring our shelters are properly funded and managed with the goal of humanely euthanizing animals that do not get adopted. A shelter is only as good as the community in which it resides. Resource Links & Petitions: 1037 Coble Ave, Albemarle NC (704) 791-4096 Asheboro
